Spaced Repetition Explained Without the Nerdy Jargon
I avoided learning about spaced repetition properly for years because every explanation of it sounded like a computer science lecture. Ease factors, retention curves, algorithms with names like SM-2. I just wanted to know why my vocabulary app kept nagging me about the same ten words at weirdly specific times. Turns out the actual idea underneath all that jargon is almost embarrassingly simple.
The problem it’s solving
In the 1880s, a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus ran an experiment on himself — memorizing lists of made-up syllables and testing how much he’d forgotten after different amounts of time. What he found became known as the forgetting curve, and it’s been replicated by other researchers since, including a solid 2015 study that repeated his original method almost exactly and got very similar results. The pattern: you forget most of what you learn shockingly fast, and then the forgetting slows down. A lot of a new word or phrase is gone within a day or two if you never look at it again.
Here’s the part that actually matters, though. Ebbinghaus also noticed that each time you review something — right as you’re about to forget it, not before, not way after — the next bout of forgetting happens more slowly. Review it enough times, at the right moments, and something you’d normally lose in a day sticks around for weeks, then months.
Turning that into a system
Decades later, a researcher named Piotr Woźniak built a computer program to actually manage this on purpose, instead of leaving it to guesswork. His software tried to predict, for each individual thing you’re trying to remember, roughly when your recall of it is about to slip below a certain threshold — often somewhere around 90% likely to be recalled — and then it prompts you to review right at that point. Get it right, and the next interval stretches out further. Get it wrong, and the interval shrinks back down. That approach became the backbone of the apps most people actually use now, like Anki and, in a modified form, Duolingo.
So when your app says “review this word today” seemingly at random, it’s not random. It’s trying to catch you right before you’d have forgotten it — because that’s the moment where reviewing does the most good.
Why “right before you forget” works better than “right after you learned it”
If you review something two minutes after you first saw it, your brain barely has to work to bring it back. There’s no real effort involved, so there’s not much learning happening either. But if a few days have passed and the memory has genuinely started to fade, pulling it back up takes actual mental effort — and that effort is what strengthens it. This is basically the same principle behind the daily-versus-cramming idea I’ve written about before: spacing works because it makes your brain do a little bit of work each time, instead of none.
The honest flaw
Spaced repetition tells you when to review something. It says nothing about what you’re reviewing or how deeply you understand it. If you’re spacing out reviews of a flashcard that only shows you a word and its translation, you’ll get very good at recalling that one narrow fact, and it still might not help you use the word in an actual sentence. The timing is only half the equation — the content of what you’re reviewing still needs to be real, in-context material, not just an isolated fact sitting on a card.
It’s also not instant. The whole system assumes you’ll show up regularly over weeks, not days. A single burst of spaced reviews packed into one afternoon isn’t spaced repetition — it’s just repetition, and it won’t give you the same result.
What this looks like without an app
You don’t need software to use this idea. A simple version:
- Learn something new today.
- Review it again tomorrow.
- Review it again three days after that.
- Review it again about a week later.
- If you still remember it easily at each step, stretch the next gap out further. If you’ve forgotten it, shrink the gap back down and start the count over.
That’s the entire idea underneath all the software. The app just automates the math so you don’t have to track it yourself. Pick five things you learned this week, and try spacing them out on your own for the next month. You’ll notice the difference before the month is over.
